Music Mondays: “Death Dream” by Frightened Rabbit

Happy Monday!

I hope you all are having a better Monday than me. I have been sidelined by a migraine headache for two days in a row now and it’s not fun AT ALL. I’ve done nothing but sleep on and off. Tried reading and catching up with the multitude of TV series and movies I’ve been keeping on my drive but the only thing I succeeded at is making my head hurt more.

Thank God there are audiobooks!

Right now, I’m listening to Camille Págan’s I’m Fine and Neither Are You. It’s on Kindle Unlimited both the e-book and audiobook. The story so far is okay, not that engaging yet but I’ve only started it this afternoon when the pain eased a little so I’m giving it a shot.

Anyway, let me share a song to you because, after all, it’s Music Monday today.

Frightened Rabbit is a recent discovery for me. I was writing my review for The Fever King when I stumbled upon Victoria Lee’s character playlists. This song, Death Dream, is included on her playlist for Noam. Sadly, when I searched for the band’s discography, I found out that the band’s frontman Scott Hutchinson died last year.

Still, I highly recommend their most recent album Painting of a Panic Attack. I have yet to listen to the rest of their songs, but I practically have this on repeat for days now. Also, if you want to check out more of Victoria Lee’s playlists for TFK, she has it all on her website. She has deleted scene written from Dara’s, Noam’s and Carter’s POV, playlists and other stuff under her Extras page. Give it a visit for TFK and Victoria’s great taste in music because, of course, she has good tastes.

Alright, that’s it for me today. I’ll go back and hide in my cave and listen some more to my audiobook.

Here’s me wishing all of you a great week ahead.

Hey there! Happy Monday, y’all!

It’s been awhile since the last time I did this Music Mondays. Work has been, for the last handful of months, been getting in the way and sapping all my energy out of me. Granted there were a couple of times when I felt like it’s all going to be over, but…I don’t know. Maybe I jinx them every time I say something about it, so I might as well not say anything at all and just do my best to get back on my blog and write.

It’s kind of working.

I’ve had a productive blogging last month, writing up four book reviews total. It might be a small number to some but to a grown woman working 12-hr sometimes 16-hr shifts a day, that’s a triumph. It sure does feel it for me, at least. I’m hoping to keep that rate up this month and maybe work on getting back on a regular posting schedule. It’ll be tough, I know but I’ve had tougher and I’m tough so I know I’ll eventually manage it. I just have to keep in mind that I’m doing this, book blogging, because I love books and I want to share that love with whoever stumbles on my blog. That’s kind of my north star right now, you could say, my goal and direction.

As is, I’ve been working on revamping my Pinterest page and working on a couple of book reviews and writing up ARC requests. It’s good, busy work that needs music in the background and, girl who did her growing half in the late 90s that I am, I queued up some girl power tunes.

Alright, I know All Saints’ Pure Shores came out in 2000, but it was between this and Never Ever, which is also a great track. I like this one better though. I went with Stop for it peppiness because I can’t quite pick my most fave Spice Girls song.

I grew up with these two girl groups and  still listen to their songs every time I get a bit nostalgic. I am totally in the band of fans who blamed Geri Halliwell for the Spice Girls’ break up. 11-year old me was devastated when I heard the band was calling it quit. Talk about me being dramatic, but that’s me as a pre-teen for you. She was a moody kid and I love her.

Anyway, enough for now. I just wonder though, did you ever listen to any of these girl groups? And how old were you when you first listened to their songs?

Music Monday: “Haunted House” by Florence + The Machine

Hey there! Happy Monday!

I’ve been quiet for most of last week, and may continue to do so in this week as I try to catch up with my reading and writing my blog posts. The last couple of months’ hectic run took a toll on both my reading and writing but since I am done with all the necessary annual reports I needed to submit, I am determined to get back on my usual program for the blog.

I have a couple of things I need to do for the blog – write reviews, work on a feature/discussion post I’ve been sitting on the last month or so, send requests for review copies. It’s all crazy, and I don’t know exactly how to start it, so if you could spare me some good luck I could really put it into good use.

I’ve been terribly outdated re: new music releases as well. Work does that to you. (I wish the younger Rachel, the one who wished she’d grow up faster so she could be an adult and do whatever the hell she wanted, could see present Rachel now.) I only found out that Florence + The Machine  released two new tracks the last month. And, of course, I’m in love with both her new songs. But somehow, with the jittery drums and piano added to Florence Welch’s beautiful vocals and haunting lyrics, I love Haunted House a little bit more. And that is the track I chose to share to you guys this Monday.

Here’s me wishing all of you a great week ahead.

Hey there! Happy Monday!

It’s already the start of the last week of the first month of this new year. Was that confusing? Play of words aside, how has January been for you? Was it great? Just fine? Bad? Mine was just fine, I guess. It was neither good nor bad and I’m actually just okay with that. Of course, that’s not counting the fact that I’ve been sick for two weeks with the flu, which sucked, but, yeah, January was an okay month.

I recently finished Melanie Dickerson’s The Warrior Maiden and Jessie Mihalik’s Polaris Rising, which I already reviewed (here’s the link.) I enjoyed these two books a lot and can’t wait for it to come out so many more people gets to enjoy them. I also started reading Veronica Roth’s Carve the Mark, a book that has been languishing on my TBR for more than a year now, and Tara Conklin’s newest The Last RomanticsI’m hoping to finish the latter sometime before the end of the month since the book is coming out next Tuesday, and I would love to have my review of it up before it releases. Keeping my fingers crossed for that!

This Monday has been relatively easy for me. I’m actually feeling kind of nostalgic, so I broke out an old favorite album by one of the band’s I loved when I was in college.

I just kind of missed this song! And Augustana! The band hasn’t released any new material for a couple of year now. I’m not even sure if they’re still together, but I still love their songs and play them from time to time. This one actually played right when I was getting out of the building where our offices are located. The wind was cool and my hair was all over the place because it escaped my hair tie again, and I just couldn’t stop myself from singing along while I walk to the shuttle. I got a few stares, but who cares. They could sing along too if they like.

Anyway, that’s it for me today. I’m going to finish some CME videos (got to keep up with the clinical trends and new knowledge) then I’ll go back to reading. Here’s me wishing you a lighthearted Monday, maybe even better than mine.

Hey! Lookie there, it’s Monday!

And I’m at home, wrapped up in my blanket typing a quick post for today because I’ve been feeling guilty for not checking on my blog for a handful of days. Also, I’m sick.

A particularly stubborn and virulent bug has been making its rounds around my workplace for the last couple of weeks. Already, many of our employees have caught it and had to take a couple sick days to rest and recover. I thought my body would be able to fend the sickness off, but I gave myself too much credit (or tempted fate too many times). Needless to say, I’m down for the count for a couple of days at least.

The whole clogged nose (yuck!) constant coughing and fever may not be nice, but it does give me a lot of reason to stay in bed. I’ve been making the most of it by catching up on my reading. I finished Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik today, and it was amazing! I still don’t know what book I’ll pick up next, but I’m sure reading and listening to music is all I’ll be doing for the next few days while I shake this bug off.

Anyway, let me share a song that’s currently on my playlist. This one is from Explosions in the Sky. If you’re going to listen to it, don’t expect words. It’s the reason why they’re on my reading playlist (same with Sigur Ros, but only because I don’t understand their songs – the lyrics are Icelandic). As much as I love music, songs with lyrics distracts me. I always end up singing or searching for lyrics on my phone because it triggered a story idea, which is nice but always counterproductive.

Alright, well, I think I babbled enough. I’m not even sure if what I wrote above even makes sense. I’m sure they’re not linear because I’m just writing whatever comes to my fogged up brain right now.

Til next time. Remember to take your vitamins, drink loads of water, always wash your hands, and, for the love of all things good in this world, cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze and cough!

Music Mondays: “The Ballad of Cleopatra” by The Lumineers

It’s the first Monday of 2019!

I know, I know…I’ve been counting all the firsts of this year. Can’t blame me, 2019 is still so shiny and new, and it’s so easy to be excited for it. Also, indulge a girl and let me count down days and stuff while I still can because by the time February comes around I’m pretty sure I’ll already be tired of saying how many Mondays or Fridays we’ve had.

Anyway, I’ve been contemplating what song I’ll share today because there’s A LOT! So I settled for not one but four songs all jammed in one music video that’s sure to make you cry.

The Lumineers is one of my most fave bands, and their album Cleopatra is my fave album of theirs. I love all the songs in that album, but these four tracks are among their best.

The Ballad of Cleopatra features the songs “Ophelia,” “Cleopatra,” “Sleep on the Floor,” “Angela/Patience,” and “My Eyes.” If you watched it, you could definitely see an interconnected story about a woman, Cleopatra, and throughout the almost 30-minute video you see her in different phases of her life. This hit me hard (and made me cry damn buckets) because it felt too real. I mean, it’s real and I could relate.

The whole video is about choices – its consequences, its outcomes and the inevitable what-ifs that follow each choice. It’s lovely and honest, and seriously, you should just watch this video because my explanation won’t do it justice. I just thought that this video and all the songs in it fit the time we’re in with the year still young and possibilities plenty, as we make new choices that’ll shape us and our lives.

That went deeper than I though it will. Any, I hope the year so far has been good for you. Mine is still hectic, but that’s just work for you. I was fortunate enough to carve some time for myself during my day-off and finish Emma Rous’ The Au Pair, which was awesome! That book comes out tomorrow so you better be in the look out for that.

Alright, here’s where I say bye for now. Til next time! Hanggang sa susunod! 😘

We only have an hour an some change left out of 2018 here on my part of the world. This year has been a roller coaster for me, mostly filled with good events but still with a smattering of not-so-good here and there. Honestly, I’m just glad to have come out of it with my sanity still intact because the last couple of months have been a real challenge for me.

But that’s alright. I’m ready for this new year.

I don’t really have a concrete goal in mind for 2019. I’ll just brace myself for whatever life throws at me with an open mind and an open heart. From me and my family (who’s busy cooking in the kitchens)

Here comes another Monday.

I’ve been having a hard time creating time for myself these past few weeks because of work. Frankly, I need a vacation – I’m thinking somewhere far from the city and its mass of humanity, somewhere quiet and far from work – but I can’t have that right now, so I’ll settle for a couple shots of espresso and a happy tune to keep my energy (and my mood) up.

This is funny because the only part of this song I know by heart is the chorus. I actually wait for it then sing as loud as I can at home whenever this song comes up shuffle. It’s just such a fun song.

Hope you enjoyed my pick today. Here’s me wishing all of you a great week ahead.

Remember, if it all feels too much, stop, breathe deeply then exhale. Now, that’s an advice I could use myself.

Music Mondays: “Where to Begin” by Covenhaven + A Few Birthday Thoughts

Hey there!

It’s been a couple of weeks since I posted something for MM. October has been really stressful and it took all my energy away. Not to mention, I also fell on a book slump. But I’m going to try and re-build my blogging schedule starting with this post.

I celebrated my birthday yesterday. I didn’t do anything special, just stayed home and ate good food with my family, had a few drinks, sang/screamed songs on videoke (it’s like karaoke, but…ahhh, feel free to Google it 😜) It was fun!

But when things settled and the calendar turned another page, I felt melancholic. It’s those times, you know, 4 in the morning, in between light and dark, the whole place quiet that you start to think about how far you’ve made it, that you’ve learned so much, that even if you lost a number of people in your life, you’ve kept the ones who truly matter and they chose you, too, chosen to stay with you and kept you sane in this crazy world. I’m going to be forever thankful for that.

So, anyway, before I get all more mushy, here’s my pick for today. It’s one of the first songs I played when I welcomed my new year. I hope you all enjoy it.

Have a great week ahead of you!

Music Mondays: “All This Time” by Tiffany

Hey look who’s back in the city!

Me!

I had a blast this weekend celebrating a friend’s birthday in the beach. It’s so much easier to find things to laugh about when you have your friends around you. Even the smallest of things (like keeping a tally of all the exit and entry points we missed 😅) could be funny, and it left me energized, ready to face another week of work.

In today’s MM, I will be sharing one of the songs from our roadtrip playlist. Me and my friends were all born in the late 80’s and we grew up listening to 90s and early 2000s music, so understandably, our playlist is made up largely of songs from those two decades. But this one, though it was released in 1988, we just couldn’t keep ourselves from singing along (there’s a video of it but I don’t want to share it. LOL 😂🤣😂). Here’s Tiffany for you with All This Time.

I hope you’re all having a great Monday so far. Be kind to the people around you, but don’t forget to also be kind to yourself.
