Can’t-Wait Wednesday: “A Constellation of Roses” by Miranda Asebedo

Can't Wait Wednesday

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted Tressa at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Last year I read Miranda Asebedo’s debut The Deepest Roots. I’m not usually into magical realism, but that book was just so beautifully written and its characters were all just so good.

And now she has a new book coming out that’s somehow set in the same universe as TDR.

Ever since her mother walked out, Trix McCabe has been determined to make it out on her own. And with her near-magical gift for pulling valuables off unsuspecting strangers, Trix is confident she has what it takes to survive. Until she’s caught and given a choice: jail time, or go live with ehr long-lost family in the tiny town of Rocksaw, Kansas.

Trix doesn’t plan to stick around Rocksaw long, but there’s something special about her McCabe relatives that she is drawn to. Her aunt, Mia, bakes pies that seem to cure all ills. Her cousin, Ember, can tell a person’s deepest secret with the touch of a hand. And Trix’s great-aunt takes one look at Trix’s palm and tells her that if she doesn’t put down roots somewhere, she won’t have a future anywhere.

Before long, Trix feels like she might finally belong with this special group of women in this tiny town in Kansas. But when her past comes back to haunt her, she’ll have to decide whether to take a chance on this new life…or keep running from the one she’s always known.

I am super excited for A Constellation of Roses and have it to read next after I finish Shannon Price’s A Thousand Fires. I’m already wondering if there’ll be cameo appearances by any of the TDR cast, but if there aren’t any, going back to the same world will be just as good for me.

A Constellation of Roses comes out November 5 (just a day after my birthday!!!) The author, Miranda Asebedo, is still running a pre-order campaign that’s open to those who live outside the US. If you want to get an exclusive art print featuring the characters of ACoR, check out this link.

The book I’ll be featuring today is one that I am really excited about. It’s a re-telling of The Illiad set in modern-day San Francisco featuring battling gangs. What’s more? It’s written by a debuting Filipino-America author.

10 Years. 3 Gangs. 1 Girl’s Epic Quest…

Valerie Simons knows the city’s gang wars are dangerous – her own brother was killed by the Boars two years ago. But nothing will sway her from joining the elite and beautiful Herons to avenge his death – a death she feels responsible for.

But when Valerie is recruited by the mysterious Stags, their charismatic and volatile leader Jax promises to help her get revenge. Torn between old love and new loyalty, Valerie fights to stay alive as she races across the streets of San Francisco to finish the mission that got her into the gangs.

I’m pretty excited about A Thousand Fires. It sounds like an action-filled one, with characters that are diverse in both their races and identities. I can’t wait to start reading it!

Happy mid-week Wednesday!

For this week’s edition of CWW I’ll be sharing my current read. It’s a book that I’m pretty excited to come out and I just feel lucky that I get to read it ahead before it hit shelves.

Violet Sterling has spent the last seven years in exile, longing to return to Burleigh House. One of the six great houses of England, Burleigh’s magic always kept the countryside well. And as a child, this magic kept Violet happy, draping her in flowers while she slept, fashioning secret hiding places for her, and lighting fires on the coldest nights to keep her warm.

Everything shattered, though, when her father committed high treason trying to free Burleigh from the king’s oppressive control. He was killed, and Vi was forced into hiding.

When she’s given a chance to go back, she discovers Burleigh has run wild with grief. Vines and briars are crumbling the walls. Magic that once enriched the surrounding countryside has turned dark and deadly, twisting lush blooms into thorns, poisoning livestock and destroying crops. Burleigh’s very soul is crying out in pain.

Vi would do anything to help, and soon she finds herself walking the same deadly path as her father all those years before. Vi must decide how far she’s willing to go to save her house—before her house destroys everything she’s ever known.

I’m only about 10% into this A Treason of Thorns and already I am in love with it. It’s deliciously atmospheric, I might just gobble it up.

I’m set to post my review of this book next week, September 15th as part of the Fantastic Flying Book Club‘s A Treason of Thorns blog tour. If you’d be so inclined, please do check out the rest of the stops.

When Deena’s wild and mysterious sister Mandy disappears – presumed dead – her family are heartbroken. But Mandy has always been troubled. It’s just another bad thing to happen to Deena’s family. Only Deena refuses to believe it’s true.
And then the letters start arriving. Letters from Mandy, claiming that their family’s blighted history is not just bad luck or bad decisions – but a curse, handed down through the generations. Mandy has gone in search of the curse’s roots, and now Deena must find her. What they find will heal their family’s rotten past – or rip it apart forever.

I just finished reading this book a couple of hours ago, and I’m telling you this one is a must-read. Written around the Magdalene Laundries and start of initiatives to repeal the 8th amendment in Ireland, and woven into the story of a teen-aged girl’s quest to discover her familial roots, All the Bad Apples is a tough book to read. It made me mad and disgusted – made me hurt – all in equal measures, but it made me hope, too.

All the Bad Apples is now out from Penguin Random House.

As the dutiful daughter of High House von Hasenberg, Bianca set aside her personal feelings and agreed to a political match arranged by her family, only to end up trapped in a loveless, miserable marriage. When her husband unexpectedly dies, Bianca vows never to wed again. Newly independent, she secretly uses her wealth and influence to save other women stuck in dire circumstances. Information is power and Bianca has a network of allies and spies that would be the envy of the ’verse—if anyone knew about it.

When her family’s House is mysteriously attacked, Bianca’s oldest brother, the heir to House von Hasenberg, disappears. Fearful for her brother’s life, the headstrong Bianca defies her father and leaves Earth to save him. Ian Bishop, the director of House von Hasenberg security—and Bianca’s first love—is ordered to find and retrieve the rebellious woman.

Ian is the last man Bianca wants to see. To evade capture, she leads him on a merry chase across the universe. But when their paths finally collide, she knows she must persuade him to help her. Bianca will do anything to save her sibling, even if it means spending time alone on a small ship with the handsome, infuriating man who once broke her heart.

As the search takes them deep into rival House Rockhurst territory, Bianca must decide if she can trust Ian with the one piece of information that could destroy her completely . . .

I’m really excited for Aurora Blazing! Bianca and Ian were already introduced in Polaris Rising, the first book in this trilogy, and I already loved them then. I can’t wait to get to know these two characters more. I’m pretty sure this book will feed me with all the space drama and hot, hot romance that my heart desires.

Hey everyone! Happy Wednesday!

Today I’m going to be sharing one of my anticipated August releases. This book is a sweet contemporary perfect for the summer (for those of you in the other half of the world, it’s already been raining a LOT here on my side.)

Since her sister’s tragic death, seventeen-year-old Callie Ryan has basically given up. Her grades have plummeted, she’s quit her swim team, and she barely recognizes the people her parents have become.

When she returns to her aunt’s run-down coastal Victorian one year after Chloe’s death, Callie resigns herself to a summer of guilt and home renovations. She doesn’t expect to be charmed by the tiny coastal town or by Tucker Morgan, a local boy brimming with sunshine.

But even as her days begin to brighten, Callie’s nights are crowded with chilling dreams, unanswered questions, and eerie phenomenon that have her convinced she’s being haunted. Will Callie be able to figure out what her sister is trying to communicate before it’s too late?

I’m almost through the ARC of this book, and I kid you not, I’m kinds of swooning over here. Tucker is just making me go all heart eyes with how sweet he is with Callie. Really, soft boys make me all gooey inside. I’m pretty sure he would make you melt, too.

Can’t-Wait Wednesday: “Wild Savage Stars” by Kristina Pérez

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I missed CWW for a couple of weeks. Life has been keeping me busy, I’m afraid. There were a few changes at my work. Nope, still doing the same thing – being a nurse and all that – but I was given a new clinic to establish and manage, which is a good thing though I haven’t gotten to feeling excited about it yet. I’ll get there eventually, I think.

Anyway, to get me back to the CWW track, I’m featuring a sequel to a book I loved last year.

Branwen has a secret powerful enough to destroy two kingdoms.

Her ancient magic led to a terrible betrayal by both her best friend, the princess Essy, and her first love, Tristan. Now this same magic is changing Branwen. Adrift in a rival court, Branwen must hide the truth from the enemy king by protecting the lovers who broke her heart―and finds herself considering a darker path.

Not everyone wants the alliance with Branwen’s kingdom to succeed―peace is balanced on a knife’s edge, and her only chance may be to embrace the darkness within…

I really loved Kristina Pérez’s take on Tristan and Iseult Sweet Black Waves when it came out last year. She created such an interesting character in Branwen – someone still coming to grips with her newfound power, someone divided between her duties and her own wants. The first book ended in a sort of cliffhanger and I’m excited to see how things pan out for her, for Tristan, maybe a bit about Iseult as well, (but if you read my review of the Sweet Black Waves you’ll know how I feel about her.)

I was lucky enough to get a chance to read an ARC of this book. I can’t get to it right now because I still have a couple more books on my schedule, but you bet I will get to this book as quick as I can.

Hello! It’s another Wednesday. Seems like once June come in, days go by faster. While I don’t exactly know how I feel about that yet, I, at least, could say that I’m excited for the books coming out this last half of 2018, and this CWW I’ll be featuring one of those titles.

A future chieftain.

Fie abides by one rule: look after your own. Her Crow caste of undertakers and mercy-killers takes more abuse than coin, but when they’re called to collect royal dead, she’s hoping they’ll find the payout of a lifetime.

A fugitive prince.

When Crown Prince Jasimir turns out to have faked his death, Fie’s ready to cut her losses – and perhaps his throat. But her offers a wager that she can’t refuse: protect him from a ruthless queen, and he’ll protect the Crows when he reigns.

A too-cunning bodyguard.

Hawk warrior Tavin has always put Jas’s life before his, magically assuming the prince’s appearance and shadowing his every step. But what happens when Tavin begins to want something to call his own?

I have this to read next after I finish with the audiobook of Victoria Aveyard’s Broken Throne.  Recently, I have been relying heavily on audiobook for my daily escape from real life. Work has been busy – a number of employees getting sick with the flu, me and our company physician finally contracting the bug after two weeks of continuous exposure – it was just nasty. I haven’t recovered yet, truly. I still have sticky phlegm (eww…TMI!) I couldn’t get out and the constant coughing has made me lose my voice.

Anyway, I’m sorry for oversharing. It’ll be a treat to find out what you guys think of this book and what you’re reading. I have a couple more ARCs to finish, but I’m always in the lookout for book suggestions.

A marvel: something you find amazing. Even ordinary-amazing. Like potatoes—because they make French fries happen. Like the perfect fries Adam and his mom used to make together.

An oddity: whatever gives you pause. Like the fact that there are hateful people in the world. Like Zayneb’s teacher, who won’t stop reminding the class how “bad” Muslims are.

But Zayneb, the only Muslim in class, isn’t bad. She’s angry.

When she gets suspended for confronting her teacher, and he begins investigating her activist friends, Zayneb heads to her aunt’s house in Doha, Qatar, for an early start to spring break.

Fueled by the guilt of getting her friends in trouble, she resolves to try out a newer, “nicer” version of herself in a place where no one knows her.

Then her path crosses with Adam’s.

Since he got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in November, Adam’s stopped going to classes, intent, instead, on perfecting the making of things. Intent on keeping the memory of his mom alive for his little sister.

Adam’s also intent on keeping his diagnosis a secret from his grieving father.

Alone, Adam and Zayneb are playing roles for others, keeping their real thoughts locked away in their journals.

Until a marvel and an oddity occurs…

Marvel: Adam and Zayneb meeting.

Oddity: Adam and Zayneb.

Love from A to Z sounds like the perfect summer read and I’m really excited to get my hands on it. Good thing then that it’s coming out next week. If you want to read a bit of this book, Bustle featured its first chapter on their site. You can check it out from this link.

Esha is a legend, but no one knows. It’s only in the shadows that she moonlights as the Viper, the rebels’ highly skilled assassin. She’s devoted her life to avenging what she lost in the royal coup, and now she’s been tasked with her most important mission to date: taking down the ruthless General Hotha.

Kunal has been a soldier since childhood, training morning and night to uphold the power of King Vardaan. His uncle, the general, has ensured that Kunal never strays from the path—even as a part of Kunal longs to join the outside world, which has only been growing more volatile.

Then Esha’s and Kunal’s paths cross—and an unimaginable chain of events unfolds. Both the Viper and the soldier think they’re calling the shots, but they’re not the only players moving the pieces. As the bonds that hold their land in order break down and their game transforms into a breathless chase of impossible attraction, both the soldier and the rebel must decide where their loyalties lie: with the lives they’ve killed to hold on to or with the love that’s made them dream of something more?

The Tiger at Midnight promised to be an epic read and I’m looking forward to get to know Esha and Kunal more. If you’re on the same page as I am, pre-order this book. Swati Teerdhala has a wonderful pre-order campaign for her baby, and the best part *queue drumroll* it’s open INTERNATIONAL.
